The eyes of the whole world are on the relations between India and Pakistan. The US has commented on this a week after Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif appealed for talks with India. America has said that it supports peace in South Asia. The US State Department says that any kind of dialogue between India and Pakistan is a mutual matter between the two countries.
US State Department spokesman Ned Price said at a press briefing in Washington on Monday, ‘We have long sought regional stability in South Asia. But the scope of any talks between India and Pakistan, any progress in the talks and the nature of the talks is a matter between the two countries.
Price said that peace between the two countries is very important for regional stability and the US has been demanding peace in the region for a long time. ‘Of course we want to see stability in the region,’ Price said.
Price spoke on America’s relations with Pakistan
Relations between Pakistan and America had soured a bit during Imran Khan’s government. Imran Khan started giving more importance to his relations with Russia than America. When the atmosphere was being prepared against Khan in Pakistan, he was continuously attacking America. He alleged that the opposition along with America wants to remove him from power. After some time, Imran Khan could not prove his majority in the Parliament of Pakistan and lost his chair.
After Shahbaz Sharif came to power, the relations between the two countries have started coming back on track. Ned Price was also questioned on US-Pakistan relations, in response to which he said that the US is ready to negotiate with any elected government in Pakistan and will work with it.
He said, ‘Pakistan is our partner. We share many interests. We have shown our desire to have better relations with all the governments of Pakistan.
However, Ned Price definitely said that America judges the governments of Pakistan on the basis of the policies adopted by them.
What did Shahbaz Sharif say about talks with India
Shahbaz Sharif had said in an interview to the UAE news channel Al-Arabiya that he wanted an honest conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said that there were many wars between India and Pakistan in the past, which caused a lot of damage. Pakistan has learned its lesson and now it wants to have serious talks with India on all other pending issues including Kashmir.
In his conversation, Sharif also said that UAE can play a big role in bringing both the countries to the negotiating table.
A day after Sharif’s statement, the Prime Minister’s Office issued a clarification on his statement saying that talks between the two countries are possible only when India restores Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir. India has not yet given any reaction to these statements coming from Pakistan.
