When Aston Villa travels to the Brentford Community Stadium on Sunday to face Brentford, they will be trying to get back on track in the Premier League.
The visitors, who are now in 12th place in the table, were defeated 3-1 at home by Chelsea on Boxing Day, while Brentford was defeated 1-0 by Manchester City on Wednesday.
Brentford has won five, drawn five, and lost eight of their 18 Premier League matches this season for a total of 20 points, putting them in 14th place in the table, nine points clear of the relegation zone, indicating that the promoted team has had a successful season thus far.
Thomas Frank’s side picked up four points from their two games against Leeds United and Watford earlier this month, but they have lost their past two without scoring against Brighton & Hove Albion and Man City.
Brentford’s next league fixture will be against Liverpool at Anfield on February 8, followed by a meeting against Man City at the Etihad Stadium on February 9, and it will be interesting to see where the Bees are in the table by then.
Frank’s side earned a point in a 1-1 draw with Villa in the reverse encounter earlier this season, while they won 1-0 when the two teams last met in Middlesex back in February 2019.
Meanwhile, Villa was scheduled to play Leeds United at Elland Road on December 28, but the match was postponed due to coronavirus concerns among the host side’s squad.
As a result, Steven Gerrard’s side has not played since losing 3-1 at home to Chelsea on Boxing Day, and they currently lie in 12th place in the table with 22 points from 18 games.
Villa has made significant progress since Gerrard took over as head coach, winning four of their first seven games, but they have struggled for consistency throughout the season and will face Manchester United in the FA Cup and Premier League in the middle of January.
The visitors have won two of their past three away league games, defeating Crystal Palace and Norwich City, and are only three points behind eighth-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers with the same amount of games (18), so a win here might help them climb the ladder.
Brentford hasn’t beaten Villa in the league since February 1947, with the Bees having won the previous two Championship games between the two sides.
