All of us must have heard many times since childhood till date that by keeping the onion pressed under the armpit, the body temperature increases in some time and you can easily make an excuse for fever. Many such articles or videos will also be found on the internet which tell the truth of this claim. However, is it really so? What is the opinion of medical experts on this issue? Let’s understand.
Actually, doctors believe that the claim of increasing the body temperature by keeping onion in the armpit is completely false. Dr. Kausar Usman, professor at King George’s Medical University, Lucknow, says that there is no truth in this claim. Not only Usman, but many other doctors also believe that there is no truth in the claim that keeping onion in the armpit causes fever.
‘Onion reduces body temperature’
According to Dr. Khyati Chauhan (BHMS, MD scholar), onions contain sulfur which attracts bacteria and microorganisms from the surrounding environment. Because of this you may feel like fever, but you do not actually have fever. If doctors are to be believed then onion helps in reducing the body temperature. For this reason, it is also advised to eat onion in the summer season.
When does fever happen?
It is also important to understand why and how fever comes. The condition of fever is formed when a person’s body temperature is higher than normal. Normal body temperature is 98.6 degree Fahrenheit or 37 degree Celsius. Actually, having fever or increasing the temperature of our body is a reaction of our body’s immune system. Through fever, our body’s immune system is able to kill or prevent harmful micro-organisms such as bacteria and viruses that are sensitive to temperature.
However, there are some chemicals which increase the temperature of our body. Sometimes our body can become hot due to the influence of the environment. Like getting very cold. Our body gets hot even after heat stroke or sun stroke.
