New Delhi: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday alleged that the Narendra Modi government at the Center betrayed the people of Ladakh by not accepting the demand for statehood to the union territory and protection of the ecologically sensitive area. He said the government was putting India’s national security at risk in the strategic border area by not accepting the demand for statehood to Ladakh and protection of tribal people under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

Betrayal despite tall promises
Kharge said on Twitter, ‘Narendra Modi ji, the people of Ladakh are unitedly demanding statehood for the Union Territory and the protection of the tribal people of the region under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. But your government has betrayed them despite making tall promises. In a video shared on YouTube, Ladakh-based social reformer Sonam Wangchuk urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure the safety and security of Ladakh, saying studies have pointed to the extinction of two-thirds of the glaciers in the Union Territory.

Wangchuk posted the video on Twitter
The Bollywood film ‘3 Idiots’ is inspired by Wangchuk’s life. Appealing to the Prime Minister to intervene to protect the fragile ecosystem under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, Wangchuk said in his video, “This is a message from Sonam Wangchuk in Ladakh (in the Indian Himalayas) to the people of India and the world about Ladakh’s ecological status.” There is an urgent appeal to help protect the sensitive area.

Kharge said – listen to the voice of Ladakh
Congress president Kharge alleged that the Modi government’s “greed to benefit select friends” was well-known as it sought to exploit the ecologically sensitive Himalayan glaciers of Ladakh. He tweeted, “By denying constitutional protection, you are also jeopardizing India’s national security in the strategic border region. Hear the voice of Ladakh.”
