Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) in Primary Enrollment in Classes 1 to 5 as a percentage of the population in the age group of six to 10 years for girls as well as boys during the financial year (FY) have improved.
It added that the GER (enrolment in classes 6 to 8 as a percentage of the population in the age group 11-13 years) in higher primary, which was stable between FY-17 and FY-19, was higher in FY-22 I have also improved in this. The Economic Survey 2022-23 states that the GER for girls is higher than that of males in the same age groups at the primary and upper-primary levels. In FY-22, school enrollment stood at 26.5 crore children, with an additional 19.4 lakh children enrolled from primary to higher-secondary levels. According to the report, there are a total of 22.7 lakh children with special needs (CWSN) in FY-22, which is 3.3% more than 21.9 lakh in FY-21.

The survey report states that in the year 2022, the rate of school drop out has also declined at all levels. The dropout rate is the percentage of students enrolled at a particular school level in one year but not enrolled in any grade the following year.
According to the report, there has been a steady decline in dropout rates at all levels in recent years. This decline is in both girls and boys gender. Schemes like Samagra Shiksha, RTE Act, improvement of school infrastructure and facilities, residential hostel buildings, availability of teachers, regular training of teachers, free textbooks, uniforms for children, Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya and PM Poshan Yojana are important for children in schools. Plays an important role in enrollment and retention.
Basic reforms in school to higher education
The report indicates that the basic facilities like toilets, electricity, computers and internet in the education world are improving over the years. In the year 2021-22, 40 percent of the country’s schools had internet, 47.5 percent had computers and 89.3 percent had electricity. At the higher education level, the number of medical colleges in the country has increased from 387 in 2014 to 648 in 2022 and the number of MBBS seats has increased from 51,348 to 96,077 during the same period.
In the engineering and management sector, the number of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) has increased from 16 and 13 in 2014 to 23 and 20 respectively in 2022. The number of Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) to increase from nine in 2014 to 25 in 2022. The survey report states that in 2014, there were 723 universities in the country, which has been increased to 1,113.
