In the 2017 election for Sundarharaicha Municipality (Morang district), Shiv Prasad Dhakal of the Nepali Congress Party (NC) received 16,822 votes (45.21 percent) out of a total of 37,208 votes and was elected Mayor. Kedar Prasad Guragain of the Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) received 15,854 votes (29.34 percent) as the first runner-up candidate. The remaining ten contenders for Mayor received a total of 4,532 (6.09) votes.
Similarly, for the position of Deputy Mayor, candidate Dhan Maya Tamang of the Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN (UML)) received 15,801 votes (42.50 percent) and was elected, while Binda Dahal of the Nepali Congress Party (NC) received 13,469 votes (25.42 percent) and finished second. Other candidates for Deputy Mayor received a total of 7,910 (10.64) votes.
