You must have heard the incidents of car theft many times, but has ever the incident of silencer theft worried you? In recent times, incidents of silencer theft in many states of the country have put pressure on the vehicle owners including the police. That is, now the eyes of the thieves are not fixed on the car but on the silencer which is considered to be of little use. And the silencer is not of every vehicle but one particular Maruti car has become a soft target of thieves. Lakhs of rupees are being played in minutes and thieves are easily carrying out such incidents. Such gangs are active in many big cities like Lucknow, Pune, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, which are making the silencer of the car disappear in the blink of an eye.
Thieves eye this Maruti car:
Maruti Suzuki’s most affordable van Maruti Eeco is currently a soft target for thieves. In this case, Additional SP, South Lucknow Manisha Singh told that, a few months ago in Mohanlalganj police station area, a similar gang was arrested who were carrying out the incident of car silencer theft. He told that, these thieves used to take out the silencer of the car in a very short time and used to sell the expensive components in the black market in the dust found in it.
He told that, the attention of the police got towards this incident because in most of the cases the silencer of Maruti Suzuki Eeco vehicle itself was being reported stolen. Manisha Singh says that the accused who were involved in this case used to collect a large amount of dust coming out of the silencer and sell it to a businessman in Delhi.

Millions game happens in minutes:
Mahesh Singh of Shiva Motors Ghaziabad says, “It is very easy for thieves to open the silencer of Maruti Eeco, as this silencer rests on only two bolts.” Mahesh also says that, “Most of the people who have been mechanics by profession or who have knowledge about the vehicle are involved in the incidents of silencer theft. Because they know which spanner in which part of the vehicle. Pana, wrench) will be used or the part can be opened easily in some way. Thieves take away the silence by opening it in just 10 to 15 minutes.”
What is special about the dust of the silencer:
Thieves are more interested in stealing the silencer of the car because it is easy to open and it has a catalytic converter made of some expensive metals. The incidents of theft increased after the company added catalytic converter to reduce the emission of gases in BS6 vehicles. The metal dust found in the silencer is being sold in the black market at high prices. It is to be noted that the dust content of new vehicles is higher than that of older vehicles, and hence, the new BS6-compliant cars are being targeted.
According to media reports, the metal dust costs around Rs 2,000 to Rs 4,000 per 10 grams in the black market, while the sensor in the silencer, which detects the oxygen level in the exhaust gas, can easily be sold by thieves for Rs 10,000 to 15,000. Huh. Money is the main reason behind the theft of catalytic converters. It contains three precious metals of the (PGM) group that aid in a chemical reaction that makes the pollutants released from the silencer less harmful: platinum, palladium and rhodium.
Mohar Singh of an authorized Maruti service center in Ghaziabad told that “The price of silencer for Maruti Suzuki Eeco ranges from around Rs 35,000 to Rs 72,000, which varies from model to model. Since the silencer has some expensive components Used, so thieves keep more eyes on this vehicle.” He told that, “The silencer is hinged only on a few bolts in the lower part of the car, that is why thieves easily open it.” The catalytic converter used in the car is also known as the exhaust manifold and its price ranges from around Rs.6,000 to Rs.10,000.
